It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts that we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Maxwell “Max” Conly Cox, a beloved son, brother, friend, and cherished member of his community. Max’s life was tragically cut short at the age of 19 following a car accident on March 28, 2026, on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Though his time on earth was brief, the impact he made on those around him was truly extraordinary.
Born on March 31, 2006, in Newport News, Virginia, Max was raised in Franklin, Virginia, where he grew into a remarkable young man defined by kindness, determination, and an infectious enthusiasm for life. A 2024 graduate of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, Max distinguished himself both academically and athletically, playing varsity football and lacrosse. Beyond his achievements, he was admired for his leadership and willingness to give back, mentoring younger students as a flag football coach and serving as a positive role model to many.
Max continued his journey at Appalachian State University, where he was a proud member of the Delta Chi Fraternity and pursued a degree in Construction Management. He carried with him a strong sense of purpose and aspiration, with plans to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps after graduation. His dedication, discipline, and vision for the future reflected a young man of great promise and character.
Those who knew Max will remember him as a vibrant spirit who brought light and joy wherever he went. He had a deep love for the outdoors, often spending his time camping, fishing, and exploring nature with friends. His summers as a powerboating counselor at Camp Sea Gull further demonstrated his compassion and leadership, as he guided and cared for young campers, leaving lasting impressions on their lives.
Above all, Max cherished his family. He is lovingly remembered by his parents, Jim and Jen Cox, and his siblings, Henry, Lizzie, and Jack, along with extended family members who held a special place in his heart. While his passing leaves an immeasurable void, the memories he created and the love he shared will endure forever.
As we mourn this heartbreaking loss, we also celebrate Max’s life—a life filled with purpose, joy, and unwavering kindness. May his legacy continue to inspire all who knew him, and may he rest in eternal peace.
